TheStreet.com

The recent class-action lawsuit brought against Taco Bell raised questions about the quality of food many Americans eat each day.

Chief among those concerns is the use of cellulose (wood pulp), an extender whose use in a roster of food products, from crackers and ice creams to puddings and baked goods, is now being exposed. What you’re actually paying for – and consuming – may be surprising.

Cellulose is virgin wood pulp that has been processed and manufactured to different lengths for functionality, though use of it and its variant forms (cellulose gum, powdered cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, etc.) is deemed safe for human consumption, according to the FDA, which regulates most food industry products. The government agency sets no limit on the amount of cellulose that can be used in food products meant for human consumption.

[Note: Humans are unable to digest cellulose since we lack the appropriate enzymes to break it down. This is a food adulterant and another example of the wholly corrupt nature of the federal agency responsible for food safety but continues to prove itself more concerned with corporate profit. ~Ed]

The USDA, which regulates meats, has set a limit of 3.5% on the use of cellulose, since fiber in meat products cannot be recognized nutritionally.

“As commodity prices continue to rally and the cost of imported materials impacts earnings, we expect to see increasing use of surrogate products within food items. Cellulose is certainly in higher demand and we expect this to continue,” Michael A. Yoshikami, chief investment strategist at YCMNet Advisors, told TheStreet.

Manufacturers use cellulose in food as an extender, providing structure and reducing breakage, said Dan Inman, director of research and development at J. Rettenmaier USA, a company that supplies “organic” cellulose fibers for use in a variety of processed foods and meats meant for human and pet consumption, as well as for plastics, cleaning detergents, welding electrodes, pet litter, automotive brake pads, glue and reinforcing compounds, construction materials, roof coating, asphalt and even emulsion paints, among many other products.

Cellulose adds fiber to the food, which is good for people who do not get the recommended daily intake of fiber in their diets, Inman said lied. It also extends the shelf life of processed foods. Plus, cellulose’s water-absorbing properties can mimic fat, he said, allowing consumers to reduce their fat intake.

Perhaps most important to food processors is that cellulose is cheaper, he added, because “the fiber and water combination is less expensive than most other ingredients in the [food] product.”

Indeed, food producers save as much as 30% in ingredient costs by opting for cellulose as a filler or binder in processed foods, according to a source close to the processed food industry who spoke with TheStreet on the condition of anonymity.

Inman said that in his 30 years in the food science business, he’s seen “an amazing leap in terms of the applications of cellulose fiber and what you can do with it.” He said powdered cellulose has a bad reputation but that more of his customers are converting from things like oat or sugar cane fibers to cellulose because it is “snow white in color, bland and easy to work with.”

Most surprising, said Inman, is that he’s been able to remove as much as 50% of the fat from some cookies, biscuits, cakes and brownies by replacing it with powdered cellulose – but still end up with a very similar product in terms of taste and appearance.

“We’re only limited by our own imagination,” Inman told TheStreet. “I would never have dreamed I could successfully put 18% fiber in a loaf of bread two years ago.”

He said cellulose is common in processed foods, often labeled as reduced-fat or high-fiber – products like breads, pancakes, crackers, pizza crusts, muffins, scrambled eggs, mashed potato mixes, and even cheesecake. Inman himself keeps a box of Wheat Thins Fiber Selects crackers, manufactured by Kraft Foods Nabisco brand, at his desk, and snacks on them daily, clearly unmoved by the use of wood pulp in its ingredients.

“Most consumers would be shocked to find these types of filler products are used as substitutes for items that they believe are more pure,” Yoshikami said. “We would expect increased disclosure to follow increased use of cellulose and other filler products as the practice increases in frequency.”

To that end, TheStreet rounded up a list of popular foods that use cellulose. It’s by no means an exhaustive list, and we suggest consumers read food labels carefully.

This is sad and you know it makes me sick to! Our COUNTRY Needs to Open Its Eyes and Realize that PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE AND WE ARE ALL EQUAL!! YOU ARENT BETTER THAN THAT PERSON BECAUSE THEY ARE GAY!! who are you to judge? Who are you to say you cannot have this job because of their sexual orientation, who are you to say you cannot get married because its a same sex marriage! Love is Love! This picture really broke my heart to think that the military is this petty! A person, not someone gay, A PERSON who is willing to fight for your rights, YOUR FREEDOM how about GIVING THEM THEIRS! LEAVE PEOPLE ALONE AND STOP BULLYING, ABUSING, ATTACKING, HUMILIATING and HURTING PEOPLE! Those of you who are of the “lord” will be judged in the end, so remember that!

Mississippi’s impending vote on granting legal rights to fertilized eggs and fetuses prior to birth has many up in arms over the likelihood of the measure abolishing abortion, blocking many fertility treatments and possibly banning popular forms of birth control.

But one thing that has been less discussed is the potential it has to affect all pregnant women by granting her fetus rights equal to and separate from her own. Rights that, if they conflict with that of the woman carrying it, could potentially put her in jail, or worse.

Allison Korn, a staff attorney at National Advocates for Pregnant Women, explains how passing “personhood” could spread the issue of criminalizing women who miscarried, putting suspicion on her that she may have “murdered” her baby, or could force women to undergo medical interventions against their wills for the “sake of the baby.” But most disturbing? Her reminder of the story of Angela Carder.

In Washington, D.C., Angela Carder, who was 27 years old and 25 weeks pregnant, became critically ill. She, her family and her attending physicians agreed on treatment designed to keep her alive for as long as possible. Nevertheless, the hospital called an emergency hearing, and based on claims of separate rights for fetuses, ordered cesarean surgery despite the fact that it could kill Carder. The surgery was performed; both the baby and Carder died.

Would hospitals put the rights of a potential life over that of the woman who carried it, choosing to prioritize a new life at the expense of the life of the mother? When so many anti-choice believers are idolizing women who choose to give birth while sacrificing their own lives, it can only be a matter of time before that become the rule.

Especially if “personhood” becomes the law of the land.

Watch a video from the National Advocates for Pregnant Women, below, which summarizes the potential threats to women that Proposition 26 offers.

I understand these kids are here for a reason, however it don’t require 4 of them in that kids face! That is ABUSE!! I DON’T CARE WHAT MILITARY TRAINING ANY ONE HAS HAD! You have to remember that this was the choice of the military person to go through that kind of training. These kids are another story, why? well firstly because a lot of parents allow disobedient behavior and do nothing until its to late and then its the child’s fault! NOT RIGHT! They learn what they are taught if their parents aren’t ever home for whatever reason including working 2 jobs, then what are these kids being taught specially teenagers!

I completely disagree with the abuse in the video, if I did that to my son any where I would have the law called on me! why? because its effin abuse! I feel sorry for any kids who have parents military or not that think its OK for this kind of discipline, it don’t teach them respect that’s for sure! What it does teach is HATE, RESENTMENT, MORE BAD BEHAVIOR. I MEAN ITS LIKE IF YOU SPANK YOUR KID YOUR HITTING THEM, THAT MAKES FEAR NOT RESPECT. Then your child turns around and smacks their sibling across there butt and what they get in trouble, that’s contradicting and so is this behavior being shown in these videos by supposed grown azz adults!

Sickening and I hope they get charged!

This is truly heart breaking it had me in tears just looking at the picture as I knew in my heart exactly what it is. This is a Freezer of Dead Cats who have been sadly euthanized. It is true pet owners and breeders need to seriously put a halt to breeding their pets, spay and neuter its a better choice for your pet. Dont think so well look at the picture above, does this look like a better case scenario I mean seriously does it. I am saddened for the people who have to do this job every day and have to see this horrible site, I’m sorry for you and wish you didnt deal with this.

Know that my animals are fixed and tattooed so there is no babies here. I know whats important and what my baby’s need! I love my animals never breed or allow to run free outside of a yard, except a fixed male kitty who was an outside cat when I got him and I cannot make him change his mind. He will prove in lots of ways reason for me to put him out, like poop on my bed, my sons bed, on the heater vent OMG the smell on a small pile of clothes in front of washer my son took from his room. Grrrrr bad kitty so he lives outside but he’s old and stays on trampoline or cars up from other critters since we live in a very rural area of Alabama.

I do wish there was something I could do to help these baby’s that are euthanzied every day. I just cant though but I have taken in 3 unwanted cats and 2 unwanted dogs. All are spayed and neutered!

Letter Below

A Letter from a Shelter Manager – anonymous in North Carolina

I think our society needs a huge “Wake-up” call. As a shelter manager, I am going to share a little insight with you all…a view from the inside if you will.

First off, all of you breeders/sellers should be made to work in the “back” of an animal shelter for just one day. Maybe if you saw the life drain from a few sad, lost, confused eyes, you would change your mind about breeding and selling to people you don’t even know.

That puppy you just sold will most likely end up in my shelter when it’s not a cute little puppy anymore. So how would you feel if you knew that there’s about a 90% chance that dog will never walk out of the shelter it is going to be dumped at? Purebred or not! About 50% of all of the dogs that are “owner surrenders” or “strays”, that come into my shelter are purebred dogs.

The most common excuses I hear are; “We are moving and we can’t take our dog (or cat).” Really? Where are you moving too that doesn’t allow pets? Or they say “The dog got bigger than we thought it would”. How big did you think a German Shepherd would get? “We don’t have time for her”. Really? I work a 10-12 hour day and still have time for my 6 dogs! “She’s tearing up our yard”. How about making her a part of your family? They always tell me “We just don’t want to have to stress about finding a place for her we know she’ll get adopted, she’s a good dog”.

Odds are your pet won’t get adopted & how stressful do you think being in a shelter is? Well, let me tell you, your pet has 72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop it off. Sometimes a little longer if the shelter isn’t full and your dog manages to stay completely healthy. If it sniffles, it dies. Your pet will be confined to a small run/kennel in a room with about 25 other barking or crying animals. It will have to relieve itself where it eats and sleeps. It will be depressed and it will cry constantly for the family that abandoned it. If your pet is lucky, I will have enough volunteers in that day to take him/her for a walk. If I don’t, your pet won’t get any attention besides having a bowl of food slid under the kennel door and the waste sprayed out of its pen with a high-powered hose. If your dog is big, black or any of the “Bully” breeds (pit bull, rottie, mastiff, etc) it was pretty much dead when you walked it through the front door.

Those dogs just don’t get adopted. It doesn’t matter how ‘sweet’ or ‘well behaved’ they are.

If your dog doesn’t get adopted within its 72 hours and the shelter is full, it will be destroyed. If the shelter isn’t full and your dog is good enough, and of a desirable enough breed it may get a stay of execution, but not for long . Most dogs get very kennel protective after about a week and are destroyed for showing aggression. Even the sweetest dogs will turn in this environment. If your pet makes it over all of those hurdles chances are it will get kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection and will be destroyed because shelters just don’t have the funds to pay for even a $100 treatment.

Here’s a little euthanasia 101 for those of you that have never witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being “put-down”.

First, your pet will be taken from its kennel on a leash. They always look like they think they are going for a walk happy, wagging their tails. Until they get to “The Room”, every one of them freaks out and puts on the brakes when we get to the door. It must smell like death or they can feel the sad souls that are left in there, it’s strange, but it happens with every one of them. Your dog or cat will be restrained, held down by 1 or 2 vet techs depending on the size and how freaked out they are. Then a euthanasia tech or a vet will start the process. They will find a vein in the front leg and inject a lethal dose of the “pink stuff”. Hopefully your pet doesn’t panic from being restrained and jerk. I’ve seen the needles tear out of a leg and been covered with the resulting blood and been deafened by the yelps and screams. They all don’t just “go to sleep”, sometimes they spasm for a while, gasp for air and defecate on themselves.

When it all ends, your pets corpse will be stacked like firewood in a large freezer in the back with all of the other animals that were killed waiting to be picked up like garbage. What happens next? Cremated? Taken to the dump? Rendered into pet food? You’ll never know and it probably won’t even cross your mind. It was just an animal and you can always buy another one, right?

I hope that those of you that have read this are bawling your eyes out and can’t get the pictures out of your head I deal with everyday on the way home from work.

I hate my job, I hate that it exists & I hate that it will always be there unless you people make some changes and realize that the lives you are affecting go much farther than the pets you dump at a shelter.

Between 9 and 11 MILLION animals die every year in shelters and only you can stop it. I do my best to save every life I can but rescues are always full, and there are more animals coming in everyday than there are homes.

My point to all of this DON’T BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER PETS DIE!

Hate me if you want to. The truth hurts and reality is what it is. I just hope I maybe changed one persons mind about breeding their dog, taking their loving pet to a shelter, or buying a dog. I hope that someone will walk into my shelter and say “I saw this and it made me want to adopt”. THAT WOULD MAKE IT WORTH IT.

Take Action

We don’t want toxic toys either.

That’s why we’re stepping up the pressure to get toxics out of toys. And we have a rare opportunity to do this.

Time is tight. On October 19th, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) will vote on whether or not independent testing for toxics like lead in paint, lead content, and phthalates in products for children under the age of 12 should be done before toys hit the store shelves.

Tell the CPSC to vote YES on October 19th for testing kids’ toys for toxics BEFORE they reach the stores: http://action.momsrising.org/go/1293?akid=2974.1835029.UMvk0Z&t=4

Taking one moment to click the above link will help stop toxic products before they hit the shelves! The current system, where you basically have to have a home chemistry lab in order to figure out if you’ve purchased a toxic toy or not, isn’t working. The vote on October 19th is an important moment for us to make a difference for all kids (and parents who are shopping for gifts) in our nation.

* The CPSC vote is scheduled for October 19th which is next week, that’s why they need to hear from families today!

This type of testing is sorely needed. Independent third party testing before products go on the market would insure the quality and safety of the products our kids interact with daily. These tests would include tests for lead and tests for phthalates. (1)

These are crucial tests. Lead is a poison. Even low levels of lead exposure can harm a child’s mental development.(2) Phthalates, a chemical used to soften plastics, can impair reproduction and development, alter liver and kidney function, damage the heart and lungs, and affect blood clotting. (3)

And now, we can help protect our kids from these dangerous toxic chemicals. Also, if the CPSC votes YES on this new rule and requires independent third party testing, then it would have the added bonus of reducing the amount of product recalls that parents have to juggle by making the toys safer before they hit the toy stores. Fewer recalls are a win-win for businesses and families because that means less returning of items to the manufacturer, less post-recall inconveniences, and fewer unhappy surprises when it comes to products in our homes. Fewer recalls would save businesses money, and save children from tears as favorite toys have to be returned.

This is it! October 19th is our moment to make a difference for kids. Tell the Commissioners at the CPSC to vote YES: http://action.momsrising.org/go/1292?akid=2974.1835029.UMvk0Z&t=6

*The Commissioners of the CPSC rarely hear directly from families, so your message today will have a big impact. Please forward this email to friends and family–and also post the action link on Facebook. The more voices, the stronger our message.

Thank you for everything you do to protect our kids.

Unexplainable, Inexcusable

No one has been able to explain to me why young men… and women serve in the U.S. Military for 20 years, risking their lives protecting freedom, and only get 50% of their pay. While Politicians hold their political positions in the safe confines of the capital, protected by these same men and women, and receive full pay retirement after serving one term. It just does not make any sense.

On Fox news they learned that the staffers of Congress family members are exempt from having to pay back student loans. This will get national attention if other news networks will broadcast it. When you add this to the below, just where will all of it stop?

35 States file lawsuit against the Federal Government

Governors of 35 states have filed suit against the Federal Government for imposing unlawful burdens upon them. It only takes 38 (of the 50) States to convene a Constitutional Convention.

This will take less than thirty seconds to read. If you agree, please pass it on.

This is an idea that we should address.

For too long we have been too complacent about the workings of Congress. Many citizens had no idea that members of Congress could retire with the same pay after only one term, that they specifically exempted themselves from many of the laws they have passed (such as being exempt from any fear of prosecution for sexual harassment) while ordinary citizens must live under those laws. The latest is to exempt themselves from the Healthcare Reform… in all of its forms. Somehow, that doesn’t seem logical. We do not have an elite that is above the law. I truly don’t care if they are Democrat, Republican, Independent or whatever. The self-serving must stop.

If each person that receives this will post it on their wall, in three days, most people in The United States of America will have the message.. This is one proposal that really should be passed around.

Proposed 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution: “Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators and/or Representatives; and, Congress shall make no law that applies to the Senators and/or Representatives that does not apply equally to the citizens of the United States ..”

Now, what are you going to do about it? Read and delete, or work for reform? Share on the wall of EVERY congressman, representative, governor, the white house!!!!! Pass it around!!! Make calls, send fax’s and email’s……………

October 25, 2011

Sixth in a series

Republican presidential candidate and Texas Congressman Ron Paul is known for his fervent opposition to armed intervention overseas and the Federal Reserve — and for his equally fervent supporters.

And while those supporters may want him to be the next president for different reasons, they’re all well aware that before entering politics, Paul was a doctor back in the southeast Texas district he represents in the U.S. House.

“I think that by being a doctor he’s able to address the root causes and not just treat the symptoms of these problems that we’re facing as Americans,” says Sean Donovan, a supporter from Boston. “And I think that it is truly admirable, his willingness to go that extra step and have a principled approach, and that he doesn’t pander to his audience.”

Others are simply impressed by his medical resume.

“I think it’s pretty cool that he delivered over 4,000 babies, and I think that gives him a leg up on understanding health care issues,” says Donna Rode, of Halifax, Pa.

And he really did deliver 4,000 babies, says Donna Paul, who worked as Ron Paul’s scrub nurse for 14 years in Lake Jackson, Texas, before marrying one of the doctor’s brothers and becoming his sister-in-law.

“They kind of figured it out; it was like one a day for a long time, and I said, ‘No, it’s more like one a night,’ ” she says.

www.ronpaul2012.com

Ron Paul, shown in this screen shot taken from his website, says he delivered more than 4,000 babies in the Texas district where he used to practice.

Born: Aug. 20, 1935 in Pittsburgh

Family: Married to Carol Paul since 1957; five children, Ronald, Lori, Rand, Robert and Joy; 18 grandchildren

Education: Gettysburg College, B.S. (1957); Duke University School of Medicine, M.D. (1961)

Career: Flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard; medical doctor in private practice

Elected Office: U.S. House of Representatives (1976-1977; 1979-1985; 1997-present)

Indeed, says Donna Paul, when Ron Paul first set up shop in 1968, he was the only obstetrician in town. “So he went for like three years without ever leaving Lake Jackson; 24-7,” she says. “He had no [other doctor] to sign out to.”

Eventually Paul got so busy he took on a partner. Jack Pruett, who was then fresh out of his obstetrics/gynecology residency, says when he first sat down in Paul’s office, he was told there were two stipulations he would have to agree to before joining the practice.

“He said, ‘No. 1 is we will not perform any abortions.’ And I said, ‘That’s fine; I can live with that. What’s No. 2?’ ” he remembers.

No. 2, says Pruett, was that the practice would not participate in any federal health programs, which meant, as Paul described it, “that we will see all Medicare and Medicaid patients free of charge, and they will be treated just like all of our other patients, but we’re not going to charge them and accept federal funds.”

Still in debt from his medical training, Pruett said that was a little harder for him to swallow. “But I liked Ron, so I decided that I would agree to that, too. And in all those 20 years, we never accepted one penny of federal money. We saw all those patients for free, delivered their babies free, did their surgeries free; whatever they needed we did, and we didn’t charge them.”

Of course, Lake Jackson being a small town, occasionally Paul would get paid in other ways.

“Some of the people would bring chickens, or they would bring vegetables from their garden if they couldn’t afford to pay for their obstetrical fee,” recalls Richard Hardoin, a pediatrician who used to care for the babies Paul delivered.

In the mid-1970s, Paul decided to run for Congress to fill an unexpected vacancy — and won. But he didn’t give up his practice, at least not at first.

“Back in those years Congress didn’t work on Friday, and so every Friday he would fly back to Lake Jackson,” says Pruett, “and he would help me then on Friday and Saturday, and oftentimes take call on Sunday, and oftentimes catch the red-eye back to Washington on Monday. And I guess he did that every single week for nine years.”

But he’s never changed any of his long-held views for political gain, say those who knew him then.

Abortion is a good example. Although he ran for president as a libertarian in 1988, Paul breaks with most members of that party (and many in his medical specialty) in that he opposes the procedure.

In a speech before the Ames Straw Poll in Iowa in August, Paul said he turned against abortion during his medical training in the 1960s, when many doctors were doing abortions in violation of the laws at the time.

“One day I walked into an operating room, and they did a hysterotomy, which is a cesarean section, lifted out a baby that was crying and breathing, and put it in a bucket in the corner of the room and let it die, and pretended nobody heard it,” he told the audience.

Meanwhile, just down the hall, he said, a baby about the same size was being born prematurely, he said, “and all of a sudden 20 people, nurses and doctors, all [were] rushing around to save the baby’s life, which seemed very logical.”

Paul said he reached an inescapable conclusion from that event: “We cannot play God and make those decisions; all life is precious.”

But Paul doesn’t toe the anti-abortion line as zealously as some of his fellow GOP candidates. He wouldn’t ban the so-called morning-after pill, for example, which some activists say prevents a fertilized egg from implanting in a woman’s uterus.

“There are circumstances where doctors in the past have used certain day-after pills for somebody with rape, and quite frankly, if somebody is treated, you don’t even know if a person is pregnant, you don’t even know if there’s a disease; but if it’s 24 hours after rape, I don’t know how you’re going to police it,” he said. “It doesn’t make any sense to me in a practical matter.”

One position that probably does satisfy both Republicans and libertarians, however, is that Paul believes that all health insurance should be voluntary.

And if an uninsured 30-year-old needs expensive medical care? That was the hypothetical posed by CNN’s Wolf Blitzer at the debate co-sponsored by the Tea Party Express in September.

Replied Paul: “That’s what freedom is all about; taking your own risks. This whole idea that you have to prepare and take care of everybody …”

Paul said “no” when Blitzer interrupted to ask if he meant that “society should just let him die?”

But it turns out the case wasn’t so hypothetical. In 2008, 49-year-old Kent Snyder, who ran Paul’s presidential bid that year, was struck by pneumonia. He died a few weeks later — without health insurance — and reportedly with more than $400,000 in unpaid hospital bills.

Even that, however, hasn’t made a dent in Paul’s position.

And as he’s proved over and over again in both his medical and political careers, Paul has satisfied his constituency by taking positions and sticking to them.

This above print was taken from http://www.npr.org/2011/10/25/141653000/before-he-delivered-for-voters-paul-delivered-babies

PRATTVILLE, AL (WSFA) – The man suspected of stabbing a Prattville woman to death is in this country illegally, says State Senator Bryan Taylor.

U.S. Marshals arrested 32-year-old Romer Gonzales Jimenez, a.k.a. Jose Luiz Jimenez, for the stabbing death of Margarita Gonzales-Perez on Wednesday, October 5. Senator Taylor says the office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed that Jimenez is in the country illegally.

“Mr. Jimenez is charged with brutally murdering a woman while their children were asleep in the next room” said Taylor. “He will be prosecuted for murder, as he should be, but if Federal immigration law were enforced, he would never have been here to begin with.”

Taylor also added he is working to confirm reports that Jimenez may have been deported in the past and has returned to Alabama several times.

Jimenez is being held at the Autauga Metro Jail with no bond.

My Thoughts

I found this story on wsfa written by JoBeth Davis, Community Web Producer.

I was blown away because, I recently posted some information about unlicensed illegals who drink and drive as a comment on change.org. I personally think they should get the boot! There is no reason for them to be here taking our resources we could use for AMERICAN CITIZENS BORN AND RAISED HERE!!! I don’t care if there kids are born here, if the parents are illegal then so are their kids! I’m outraged and disgusted. If the laws were more strict yes, this wouldn’t have happened to begin with, at least not here!

We need serious changes here.
